Who are we and where did we come from?
The Humane Society of Southern Illinois has been in operation since 1956. Since the beginning we have been available to the community trying to make a difference for the animals here. Stressing the importance of spay and neuter and over all animal care. Providing a safe haven for animals who have become lost and a centralized place for owners to look for them.
Over the years we have made updates to the facility but the majority of the original structure is still in use. Our overall goal has remained the same to help as many animals as we can find homes and to try and encourage the community to provide proper care for their pets and to spay and neuter them. In 1997 we began a program called Pennies for Pets to provide members of the community a low-cost voucher to take to a participating vet to get their personal pets altered. To this date we have assisted with over 7,000 spay and neuter surgeries since the beginning of the program.
